1. (indică obligaţie, poruncă) these rules shall be followed by aceste instrucţiuni vor trebui urmate de;

4. (simpla exprimare a opiniei) we should have arrived by this time ar fi trebuit să fi sosit la ora asta;
that should suit you iată tocmai ceea ce îţi trebuie;
I should think so! cred că da, cred şi eu!
5. (ca formulă de politeţe) shall I open the window? (vreţi) să deschid fereastra?;
let us go in, shall we? vreţi să intrăm?
shall he come? vreţi / aţi vrea ca el să vină?
6. (în exclamaţii, întrebări retorice; cu înţelesul iniţial slăbit; în propoz. subordonate condiţionale if-clauses);
how should I not be happy? cum să nu fiu fericit? de ce n-aş fi fericit?;
whom should I meet but John! pe cine văd / întâlnesc? pe John!;
who shall describe their surprise? cum să descriu surpriza lor?
he ordered that they should be released porunci ca să li se dea drumul / să fie lăsaţi liberi;
if he should come / should he come (you will) let me know dacă se întâmplă să vină/ dacă vine, anunţă-mă / înştiinţează-mă;
should it prove correct în caz că e adevărat;
should the occasion arise, should it so happen dacă se iveşte prilejul, în acest caz;
in case he should not be there în caz că nu e acolo, în cazul când n-ar fi acolo.
7. (folosit ca verb auxiliar la formarea viitorului; exprimând voinţa, promisiunea, ameninţarea etc.; folosit astfel la pers. a II-a în întrebări) we shall hope to see you again sperăm că vom avea prilejul să vă revedem;
shall you come tomorrow? o să veniţi mâine? veniţi mâine?
8. (în propoz. principale, când secundara e condiţională);
if he comes I shall speak to him dacă vine am să-i vorbesc;
we should come if we were invited am veni dacă am fi invitaţi;
had you written to me I should have answered you dacă mi-ai fi scris ţi-aş fi răspuns;
I shouldn’t do it if I were you dacă aş fi în locul tău n-aş face-o.
9. (în afirmaţii atenuate);
I should like a drink aş bea cu plăcere un păhărel;
I should think you were right cred că aveaţi dreptate;
I shouldn’t be surprised (if) nu m-aş mira (dacă, ca), nu m-ar surprinde (dacă);
we shall probably be right in saying that poate (că) nu ne înşelăm dacă susţinem / dacă afirmăm că.
